Get in touch with the unspoilt wilderness
Trekking is one of the best activities to get in touch with nature and is a perfect option for Solomon Islands, as the natural world here is so beautiful, vivid and full of life. Whether you are an experienced hiker or just looking for something short and fun to fill an afternoon, you will find plenty of different options in Solomon Islands. Here are some of the best treks that you should consider.
Short treks from Honiara
Mataniko Falls is a well-known trek that takes about 2-hours of fairly high intensity walking to reach these lovely falls. Manatiko River was an important battle site in WW2 and there are some fascinating history remnants to see along the way. Once you arrive at the falls, it’s mesmerising to watch the water cascade its way down over huge boulders before disappearing into a cave below. There are some excellent swimming holes for a cool down and depending on the season and the water level, it’s often possible to raft part of the way back. If you’re up for a short drive, the Borare Cascades are a 20-kilometre drive from Honiara, followed by a stunning 1-hour trek into the wilderness. There’s a wonderful rocky waterfall that feeds a series of ponds that make for fantastic swimming holes. There’s also plenty of shady spots for a picnic lunch.
Explore the Mountains
Head to Ringgi in Western Province where you’ll find Kolombangara, a small, almost perfectly round island with a 1770-metre high cone volcano. The 2-day trek starts on the gentle lower plains and you work your way through the jungle and ascend to the crater rim, where you have breathtaking views of your surrounds.
On Nggatokae Island in the New Georgia group of islands, you’ll find Mt Mariu, an 887-metre high peak that you can climb during a rewarding 3-day / 2-night trek. Mt Mariu is known for its stunning cloud forest that you pass through as you ascend the mountain. The trek starts through farm and lowland rainforest and the sunset from the summit is simply spectacular and the views across beautiful Marovo Lagoon will take your breath away.
